When We Left Paris - Jazz Ensemble

When We Left Paris – Jazz Ensemble is a Lisbon-based contemporary jazz quintet, featuring Bruno Pernadas (guitar / composition), Sérgio Rodrigues (piano), Pedro Pinto (double-bass), João Capinha / Desidério Lázaro (saxophones) and Joel Silva (drums).
The uniqueness of this group stands out in the original way it combines the music score with improvisation – a constant guideline moving their music.
The composition itself is the starting point to a musical structure allowing complete freedom of rhythmic, emotional and interpretational diversity to each ot its artists/musicians. This ensemble is influenced by various music styles such as contemporary and chamber music, independent jazz, rock, cinematic sountracks and “milonga” – Argentine tango.
Gathering all this styles, the band tries to bring out the identity of each one, however combining the different harmonic and rhythmic languages, their textures and scholar references.
Making use of arrangements, counterpoint, tempo variations, atonality, free and structural improvisation, the band seeks to develop non conventional forms of communication, away from mainstream jazz.
In doing so, they seek to underline the melody, established as a guideline to the various harmonic colours, flowing between the musical foundations of contemporary music and musique concrète. This way of conceptualizing music pursues musical awareness based on the constant search of artistic freedom, outside the principles of a more conservative academia.
